Frequently Asked Questions
We find that the more direct support you have under the ExpandBed, the better sleep experience you’ll have. The ideal setup for any foam mattress is a slatted frame, a platform bed, or an adjustable base. We designed our mattresses to work with all standard foundations. For optimal support of any ExpandBed mattress, we recommend using the ExpandBed foundation and the metal frame.
The engineering behind ExpandBed products goes far beyond aesthetics. Our mattresses are the result of intensive research and continuous development by our R&D team. Unlike putting a cover over an off-the-shelf construction, our approach allows us to quickly respond to customer feedback and continually enhance our products. As a result, the original ExpandBed mattress has received high praise from Consumer Reports, was named one of Time magazine’s best inventions, and holds multiple industrial design awards.
All the foams in ExpandBed mattresses are CertiPUR-US® certified. These foams are made without ozone depleters, PBDE flame retardants, mercury, lead and other heavy metals, formaldehyde, phthalates regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. They are Low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions for indoor air quality (less than 0.5 parts per million).
Each mattress was designed to offer a well-balanced night’s sleep with an innovative combination of foams and rigorous testing to fine-tune what sleepers need to wake up their best selves.
ExpandBed mattresses are designed and made in the United States with components coming from several states, and some from abroad.
As long as your sheets are compatible with a 12-inch-high mattress, they will absolutely fit on any of the ExpandBed mattresses! We recommend using ExpandBed sheets for the best sleep environment possible.
All the foams have environmental certifications that ensure they are safe and non-toxic. Every layer is CertiPUR certified.
CertiPUR-US® approved foams are made without ozone depleters, PBDE flame retardants, mercury, lead and other heavy metals, formaldehyde, phthalates regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. They are Low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions for indoor air quality (less than 0.5 parts per million).
The federal government requires all mattresses sold in the US to meet very stringent burn tests, as governed by 16 CFR 1633 and 1632.
A fire retardant knit sock covers the foam before the outer cover is placed on our mattresses. The knit sock is made from a proprietary yarn with a silica core and a polyester/acrylic/nylon/rayon outer wrap. When the yarn burns, a char barrier is formed, which prevents oxygen from feeding the flames.
ExpandBed mattresses are covered by a 10-year limited warranty. You can find more details by browsing our warranty page. In short, we’ll either repair any issue causing the mattress an indent greater than one inch, or, pending on the severity, we’ll replace the bed entirely. We also cover any physical flaw in the mattress that causes our foam layers to split or crack despite normal usage and proper handling. Finally, our warranty extends to the mattress cover and any manufacturing defect in the zipper assembly.
Should any of these issues happen to you, please reach out to us as a warranty claim. Our top priority is resolving your issue as quick and painlessly as we can.
Yes! The mattresses are vegan.
The ExpandBed mattresses do not contain any flame-retardant chemicals. Our flame retardant is a proprietary woven silica sock that’s just under the cover. In the event of a fire, the sock melts on itself and suffocates the oxygen needed for the fire to burn.
Any new product can have a mild scent upon unboxing. Should your ExpandBed mattress have a scent, it will dissipate in a few hours in a well-ventilated room. Though our water-based adhesive is more expensive, it eliminates unnecessary chemicals in your bed, which was a very important factor in our design process.
ExpandBed mattresses provide more movement isolation than a traditional spring mattress. We don’t suggest jumping on the bed with a glass of red wine on the other side, but we designed the sleep surface to strike a perfect balance between motion isolation and a comfortable bounce. If your partner is more than 6 inches away, you won’t feel or hear their tosses and turns.
All ExpandBed foams are all CertiPUR® certified, requiring that they are made without formaldehyde, ozone depleters, mercury, lead, and other heavy metals. This certification also requires the foam to have low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions for indoor air quality (less than 0.5 parts per million).
ExpandBed mattresses are intended for permanent use. Once out of the box, a mattress will not recompress or roll up like an airbed. If you aren’t using it as your primary mattress, we recommend storing it fully opened and laid flat. It can also be temporarily stored on its side.
Each ExpandBed mattress is designed with foams that retain bounce and remain supportive night after night, throughout your life with the mattress. With the correct support underneath, your ExpandBed will perform as it should and you can sleep well night after night! As a foam mattress, your ExpandBed will need a firm, flat, surface. We also recommend rotating the mattress every 6 months for even wear. It’s actually covered in our 10-year warranty, which you can read more about here.
ExpandBed mattresses are specifically designed to sleep cool. We put a lot of R&D into how ExpandBed mattresses perform throughout the night — like running thermal imaging tests and sweat tests.
Our mattresses use a breathable comfort foam to offset the memory foam layered beneath it. This construction helps keep the mattresses nice and breezy so sleepers stay comfortable.
You can start snoozing right away! Once your sheets are on, you’re good to go! Just make sure your mattress is facing right-side-up before putting your sheets on.
Yes, you can absolutely use your ExpandBed mattress on an adjustable base! As long as the base is solid, flat, and compatible with foam mattresses, it will work just fine. We recommend the ExpandBed adjustable base as it’s designed to perfectly support all of our mattresses.
Once you take your mattress out of the box, it will expand and be ready to sleep on within minutes. Please note that some mattresses may take longer to expand.
All ExpandBed mattresses come with a 10-year warranty and an open line to our dedicated Customer Experience team.
An ExpandBed mattress will always remain just as comfortable as the day you unboxed it. Our thoughtfully designed four-layer construction ensures that your mattress will retain its shape and support.
Unlike spring mattresses, which tend to break down quickly with compression, our foams are designed to keep you comfortable and relaxed throughout the years. Our layers result in a durable, comfortable, and supportive product from the moment you hop into bed.
Conventional wisdom states you should replace your mattress once every 10 years. Of course, this number is dependent on how often you use the mattress and how well you care for it, but it’s a good rule of thumb for your primary bed’s lifecycle.
Here are two reasons why we advise not keeping it longer than 10 years. Over time, natural materials accumulate in the mattress, eventually degrading the foam. Additionally, sleeping in the same spot repeatedly over a period of time can impact a bed’s performance. In order to guarantee great sleep for years to come, we highly recommend considering a replacement every decade.
ExpandBed mattresses are specifically designed with long-term durability and resilience in mind. Our engineers and designers were tired of purchasing expensive mattresses only to find the foam or springs unsupportive after a few short years. So, we set out to layer foam in an innovative way.
It’s important to remember that any mattress worth its salt should last at least 8 years. If you’ve been sleeping on a bed for a short time, and it’s already sagging or giving you back pain — you probably don’t have a high-quality mattress. The great thing about ExpandBed mattresses is that our warranty covers a full 10 years, so you’re guaranteed to have restful, rejuvenating sleep year after year.
To extend the life cycle of your mattress, it’s also important to take proper care of it. Rotating the ExpandBed with the seasons will allow for even wear and tear. ExpandBed’s waterproof mattress protector and foundation can also keep your mattress feeling like new.
All ExpandBed mattresses ship in boxes to your doorstep. Please take into account the size of the box when receiving your mattress!
The ExpandBed Essential box measures 16.25″ x 16.25″ x 42.5″
The ExpandBed mattress box measures 17 x 17 x 42 inches.
The ExpandBed Wave box measures 19 x 19 x 41 inches.
For the most breathable, easy protection, we recommend using the ExpandBed mattress protector. Purchasing the protector will allow your investment to last the longest possible time. Putting a fitted sheet on top of your mattress will keep it clean if you aren’t interested in the protector, but it won’t prevent spills or leaks from seeping into the foam.
If you have to wash your cover, we don’t recommend machine washing it, as the cover may shrink. Instead, unzip and remove the cover and gently dab and spot clean with a mild detergent. The top part of the cover can be hand-washed cold and then air-dried, since any heat might cause the cover to shrink. Please make sure that the cleaned area is dry before zipping your cover back on and putting sheets back over the mattress! Mattress protectors can add even more protection, however keep in mind that the covers may reduce breathability.
No! ExpandBed mattresses are not designed to be flipped. The foams are strategically layered, so make sure the right side is facing up! As with all mattresses, if you sleep alone on one side of the bed or have a meaningful weight differential with your mattress partner, then we do recommend rotating the bed 180 degrees every 3-6 months.

The transition foam layer features Zoned Support™ for alignment and comfort. The mattress is enveloped by a custom designed and hand-sewn, zip-off cover that complements nearly any bedroom.
